About Me

I come from a large artistically inclined family of painters, musicians, poets, and educators in Santa Barbara, CA. My independent painting endeavors began when I was about 18 years old and I stepped up the attic stairs and spread out my brushes and oil colors to paint an old window, framing a close-up of the Pepper tree outside. Since then, over the years my progress has been intermittent as I've had to work other jobs mostly in the carpentry field for a good chunk of the rest of the last five-plus decades. I've taken a few adult education classes which has widened my understanding of painting in general as well as techniques and painting mediums, especially oil paints, which has been my favorite painting medium.

As children, my parents encouraged us kids to pursue the arts. They enrolled me and a sister in a summer art class downstairs in the basement of the Santa Barbara Museum Of Art. I remember feeling so privileged to be there and felt empowered to nurture more of that type of education. While other siblings ventured on with music or higher learning, painting has been a valuable means for fulfilling my gravitation towards something that consumes the full energy of mind, body, and spirit.

What inspires me are moments -- while walking or driving I'll take mental notes -- when I'm made aware of empressing effects of sunlight or moonlight, or how a streetlight will embellish a simple wall or sidewalk. Images like these spark my imagination, as well as, objects linked to the past, like rusty abandoned automobiles. These creative impulses attend my mind also to things in the natural world as well and eventually will generate enough creative gravity to insist above other interests to begin painting.

My interest in forming subject matter for a painting can develop sometimes when I examine certain things we perceive as no longer any use or have become obsolete, and am inspired to create a visual semblance of how it resonates within me, such as a depiction of something neglected or forgotten; a tattered old house, an aged tree, a derelict vehicle, or the heartache of the passing years of the homeless.

Acknowledging the contrast of these, sometimes unnoticed narratives in which the past and present suggest a dichotomy in the space of time -- I mean a confrontation between the natural world and the mindset of man's will to make changes in it -- then one can discover the essence of humility and awareness.

My aim and emphasis are to elevate these venerable things for the viewer's interest, which also gives me a sense of satisfaction knowing that I may have redirected someone's focus to appreciate the beauty or importance of timeworn things, nature ... and persons.
